May 14th 2010
Vancouver, May 14, 2010 – The Keg Royalties Income Fund (the “Fund”) has reported its financial results for the three months ended March 31, 2010.
Total system sales reported by KRL for the 13 weeks ended April 4, 2010 decreased by $2.4 million or 1.9% to $120.3 million. Royalty Pool sales decreased by 3.2% to $117.0 million for the quarter compared to $120.9 million for the same quarter of the prior year. The decrease in gross sales reflects the net impact of the addition of net new sales to the Royalty Pool at the beginning of the year and a decrease in same store sales.
KRL’s same store sales (sales of restaurants that operated during the entire period of both the current and prior year) decreased by 3.2% in Canada and by 14.4% in the United States for the 13-week period ended April 4, 2010. After translating the sales of the U.S. restaurants into their Canadian dollar equivalent, consolidated same store sales decreased by 6.6% for the 13-week period. The average exchange rate moved from 1.24 in the first quarter of 2009 to 1.04 in the first quarter of 2010 significantly decreasing the Canadian dollar equivalent of the U.S. restaurant sales.
Royalty income decreased by $199,000 or 4.1% to $4,695,000 for the quarter as a result of the decrease in gross sales.
Earnings before income taxes decreased to 32.7 cents/Fund unit from 34.2 cents/Fund unit during the quarter. Distributable cash available to pay distributions to Fund unitholders decreased slightly to 33.5 cents/Fund unit from 33.6 cents/Fund unit for the quarter. The Fund paid distributions of 32.0 cents/Fund unit during the quarter.
“We are encouraged by the improvement in overall consumer sentiment in North America,” said David Aisenstat, President and CEO of Keg Restaurants Ltd. “We expect that positive trend, combined with increased spending intentions, to translate into improved restaurant sales. Given our leadership position and brand awareness in Canada, we expect those positive signs to begin to generate greater same store sales growth.”
